Founder and President Winston Damarillo reminded how the open source movement helped put powerful tools into everyone's hands. He sees today's AI moment the same way, because the technology only creates real change when access is shared, not locked behind a privileged few. As he put it: "We cannot be happy with just consuming AI. Our new mission is to create AI, to create solutions powered by AI, and to make sure that the Philippines democratizes access to AI so everybody gets access to it." That vision came to life through the voices building it. Ms. Pam Damarillo of DEVCON Kids reminded everyone that "talent is universal, opportunity isn't," and that access, not ability, is what holds Filipino kids back. Megan Uyao, who joined DEVCON Kids at 12 and now serves as its Ambassador at 17, made the case for programs like Hour of AI 2026: "Sometimes all it takes is just one hour for students to realize that their future could be something else, something better." Executive Director Dom De Leon emphasized that true innovation isn't just building the future—it's ensuring everyone can reach it. He reported that DEVCON reached 19,000 geeks face-to-face nationwide in 2025 led by Bukidnon, Iloilo, and Manila, and announced upcoming nationwide Open Source AI Code Camp running offline models like Gemma and Qwen, and a 5th cohort of AI Engineering Interns building on NVIDIA Jetson Orin and Claude Code for Non Profits. 17 years of building, and the celebration is happening nationwide. Before participants touched a single tool, they went through a structured session on critical thinking and problem solving, learned how to write a Product Requirements Document (PRD) as the first real step of their development process, and immediately got to apply it to their own projects. Every prototype built today was grounded in purpose and structure, not just output. That is what PROMPTWARS was designed to do. Not just teach students how to prompt an AI, but train them to think like builders first: define the problem, frame the solution, write the requirements, then use the technology to bring it to life. The energy, the pitches, and the ideas that came out of today's event proved that Filipino students are more than ready for that challenge. What does it mean to lead in the age of AI? DEVCON Philippines Founder and President Winston Damarillo put it plainly during the NEXUS Pilot AI Training: "You have the capacity and the ability to wield the power of the world's most knowledgeable coders. The mission changes a little bit — what you need to think about now is: what can you do with it?" The pilot NEXUS AI Training, provided by NMBLR and personally led by Winston Damarillo, opened with a nationwide hybrid morning keynote connecting DEVCON chapter heads from Bukidnon, Pampanga, Legazpi, and beyond. The sessions covered the evolution of open source in the age of AI, cultivating T-shaped skills, and keeping humans in the loop as skeptical auditors of AI output. Leaders got hands-on with Claude, Qwen, and Antigravity as core tools for multiplying community impact nationwide. The training wrapped with a three-hour live hackathon where teams built real solutions using the full Nexus stack: Claude, Qwen, Ollama, Antigravity, and Google AI Suite, aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals #4, 8, 9, and 16.
